Middle School

The insight and understanding to meet the challenges of increasingly independent learning

Safe stepping stones.

Step by step, children are being guided to become more independent learners.

“Da Vinci’s unique Middle School structure ensures my daughter will be well prepared to face the challenges of IGCSEs and A-levels.”

Mrs Marzouki

Students in Middle School have the advantage of being taught by specialist subject teachers in their home classroom or in our specialist facilities such as the Art studio and the Science and IT labs.

This approach provides the students with a smooth transition from the Lower School structure to the more complex Upper School system, by significantly improving their individual learning and organisational skills.

Each class has a form tutor who has a pastoral role and also maintains a careful overview of each student’s progress and well-being.

At Da Vinci we place a strong emphasis on language learning. Across Middle School, both Dutch and French are taught in levelled groups ranging from beginners to native speakers.

Much attention is paid to ensuring that all children are well prepared for Upper School and that they receive the education that is best suited to their level of ability.

Children in Middle School follow The Cambridge Lower Secondary Curriculum for English and Mathematics. The remaining subjects (Art and Design, Drama, Geography, History, ICT & Computing, Language Arts, Music, Physical Education and Science) follow The International Middle Years Curriculum (IMYC). This is a challenging, engaging, internationally-minded, concept-focused curriculum designed specifically for the unique learning needs of 11-14 year olds.

Cultural trips to Belgium’s major cities and other destinations extend our students’ field of discovery and offer the valuable insight that Belgium is a part of a wider Europe. Physical challenges are offered through our annual Sports Day and optional Ski Trip. Students also enjoy an annual residential field trip in the United Kingdom which offers an exciting mix of educational and recreational activities.

Both informal and formal assessments are carried out regularly throughout the school year with exams taken at the end of each semester. Parents are always kept up to date about their child’s progress through progress updates, end of semester reports and parent-teacher meetings.
